Bells of memory

This year, the project commemorating the crimes of totalitarian regimes and the 20th century Prague personalities who fought against them continues.

The long-term project Bells of Memory was launched in September 2023 by Prague City Tourism, Museum Kampa and the Museum of the Memory of the 20th Century in memory of famous and lesser-known personalities associated with Prague who resisted one of the two totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. Since September, the bells of the St. Nicholas City Bell Tower in Mala Strana have been ringing regularly for these people. The project started with the exhibition Eyes of the State Security on Kampa, and the first bell ringing took place on 14 September 2023 for Jan Masaryk. Then, until the end of 2023, the bells were rung for Adolf Kajper, Alfred "Fredy" Bartos, Bohuslav Modrý, Fráňa Zemínová, Josef Škvorecký, Stanislav Broje, Alois Eliáš, Bohuslav Burian, Vojtěch B. Luža, Karel Kutlvašr, Jiří Křižan, Jiří Němec, Jaroslav Smržová, Ivan Jirous, Josef Hasil, Augustin Bubník, Hana Benešová, Čestmír Šikola, Karel Pecka, Karel Hašler and Karel Čapek. In January, the St. Nicholas Bell will ring for Jaroslav Seifert, Augustin Machalka, Michal Mareš and Jan Palach. For each of the commemorated personalities you can read the medallions written by Kryštof Zeman, Jan Kalous, Vít Fojtek, Teresa Urbář, Petr Blažek and Veronika Bendová.
