Commemoration of JUDr. Milada Horáková (27 June 2024)

On Wednesday, 26 June 2024, a commemorative gathering organized by the Milada Horáková Club was held in the Basilica of Sts.Peter and Paul in Vyšehrad.

The commemorative gathering was attended by representatives of the government, the City of Prague, municipal districts and other important institutions. The Museum of the Memory of the 20th Century was represented by its director Petr Blažek. A particularly important guest was Mrs. Milena Bartosiewicz, niece of Milada Horáková. The commemoration included the laying of wreaths and bouquets at the symbolic grave of Milada Horáková and at the Memorial to Priests, Religious Men and Women Victims of Nazism and Communism. The commemorative gathering was then closed by the Dean of the Vyšehrad Chapter, P. Michal Němeček, with a prayer.

JUDr. Milada Horáková became actively involved in politics and became a member of the Czechoslovak People's Party. After the Second World War she was involved in the anti-communist resistance. In 1949 she was arrested and accused of conspiracy against the communist regime. She was sentenced to death in a politically motivated trial. Her trial was condemned worldwide as politically motivated and unjust. Despite international pressure and calls for clemency, Horáková was executed by hanging in Pankrác Prison in Prague. Milada Horáková became a symbol of the victims of the totalitarian regime in Czechoslovakia and her memory is an important part of Czech national consciousness. She was only rehabilitated after the fall of the communist regime in 1989. Her fight for justice and human rights is still recognised and admired today.
