Century of Martyrs | Century of Martyrs

Mezinárodní výstava / International Exhibition

The history of the 20th century was tragically marked by the rise of totalitarian ideologies and regimes. Communism, fascism and Nazism brought immeasurable suffering to hundreds of thousands of people and claimed countless victims as a result of wars even in those parts of the world that were not under their direct domination. All these ideologies were born out of hatred and were associated with wanton and often cruelly inhuman violence. The 20th Century Memory Museum and the Platform for European Memory of Conscience have prepared a Czech version of the exhibition on the life stories of twenty-seven Christians who gave their lives for their faith. Among the martyrs are P. Josef Toufar and Bishop Gorazd II.

The original English version of the exhibition was prepared by the Platform of European Memory and Conscience in 2021 and has already been exhibited in Poland, Hungary, Albania and Romania. A Czech-English catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition. Worksheets for project lessons for social studies subjects have also been prepared.

The Century of Martyrs exhibition took place from 23 September to 22 October 2022 at the Ambit Gallery in the Convent of Our Lady of the Snows near Jungmann Square in Prague. The opening took place on Monday 26 September 2022 at 5 pm.
