AUGUST DECLARATION
OF SUPPORT FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A MUSEUM OF MEMORY XX. CENTURY IN PRAGUE

This year marks the eightieth anniversary of the Nazi occupation in March 1939 and the thirtieth anniversary of the end of the communist regime in November 1989. Half a century of totalitarian and authoritarian rule regimes on the territory of Czechoslovakia brought hundreds of thousands of victims and the suppression of traditional European values civilisation. On 23 August 2019, it will be eighty years since the conclusion of the Allied Treaty between Germany and the Soviet Union, which contained a secret amendment to divide the sphere of influence of the two totalitarian regimes on the European continent. This historic event is commemorated each year on the European Day of Remembrance of the victims of Communism and Nazism.

If we want to decide our future, we have to say who we are and where we came from and where we are going we want to go. That is why we consider it necessary to commemorate not only the victims of totalitarian regimes, but but also the honourable bravery of the citizens who, on the basis of their democratic convictions, decided to fight for freedom and actively oppose tyranny. Given that, over time. eyewitnesses of the historical events of the 20th century are passing away, it is important to convey their lives experiences to the next generation. Understanding the nature of authoritarian ways of ruling, controlling and control of society is essential to understanding the contemporary threats we collectively face. In this context, it is important to remember not only the crimes and heroic acts committed, but also the forms of adaptation or open collaboration.

To fulfill this mission, we consider it appropriate to establish a modern museum, conceived as a an educational and open cultural institution in the service of society, which preserves, explores, and exhibits tangible and intangible evidence of recent history. In Prague, unlike in Prague, unlike many other world capitals, we do not yet have such a museum. The elected representatives of the capital of the City of Prague have declared their desire to establish such a museum. We support this project and offer our cooperation in making it a reality.
