For schools: film screenings (5-8 November 2024)

The Museum of the Memory of the 20th Century cordially invites teachers, students and pupils to participate in educational programs for schools as part of the 5th annual international film festival on the 20th century , THE UNBroken and the Sacrificed. The central theme of the festival is 1989 in Czechoslovakia and other Soviet bloc countries. Each film screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker or a historian. The programme is free for schools and will take place in the large hall of the Atlas Cinema (Ke Štvanici 371/4, Prague 8). The schedule of screenings, including annotations of specific films, can be found below. If you are interested, please make a reservation for the film screening by emailing vzdelavani@mpxx.cz.

EPOCHA BETWEEN AUGUST AND NOVEMBER r. Jan Rousek, Czech Republic, 2019, 89 min.
The documentary film by historian and director Jan Rousek explores the period of the so-called normalisation from the invasion of Czechoslovakia to the collapse of the communist regime at the end of the 1980s, from the unique perspective of the representatives of the regime themselves.

NIKOMU JSEM NEUBLÍŽIL r. Pavel Křemen, Czech Republic, 2011, 57 min.
How did the State Security officers search for and "break" future agents? How often did it happen that the person they had selected refused to sign a secret cooperation agreement? How much did the agents earn for delivering the required reports and how do they evaluate their work in hindsight? Do former StB officers feel guilty today? In his search for answers to these questions, director Pavel Křemen interviewed three former State Security officers and nearly a dozen who were led as agents or secret collaborators.

DIAGNOSIS '90 OR LITTLE CZECH AND SLOVAK RITUALS r. Martin Vadas, Czechoslovakia, 1991, 76 min.
A documentary film by Martin Vadas not only about rites of passage and bullying in military basic service. The programme begins with a reflection on the wishes and expectations of parents towards their children. A poll is conducted among children about what they want to be. It looks at the rituals that follow us through childhood, adolescence and throughout life, the conditions in the classroom, the rites of passage for joining guilds, the clique in the sports team of a top youth centre, the hierarchy of relationships in family, school, special interest groups, employment and the military...

STOPPERS OF VÁCLAVA HAVLA r. Pavel Štingl, Czech Republic, 2020, 52 min.
Analytical documentary on the topic of freedom of speech. A commemoration of the important day of the fall of censorship brings back the atmosphere of the Letná demonstrations.
What did the acquired freedom bring us in confrontation with the events of 2020? A dialogue between well-known and lesser-known personalities with the legacy of the first President of the Czech Republic against the background of the commemoration of November 89 in Pavel Štingl's documentary.

TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF - MARTIN r. Helena Třeštíková, Czech Republic, 1994, 60 min.
A unique series of films Tell me something about yourself, which was started in the spring of 1989 by director H. Třeštíková used an unusual and unique collection method in the juvenile detention centre in Libkovice. The film material is shot over a period of two to five years and captures not only the changes in the lives of the individual protagonists, but also in society as a whole.

CZECH STUDENT REVOLTS (80S) dir. Olga Sommerová, Czech Republic, 2016, 52 min.
Students are perceived by Czech society as non-conformist and are often associated with political resistance. It is interesting and meritorious to recall the basic moments of student engagements at historical points in our society. Students have spoken out whenever freedom has been threatened.
The second part of Student Revolts is devoted to the years 1987-1989. Martin Mejstřík, Pavel Dobrovský, Šimon Pánek, Monika MacDonagh-Pajerová, Pavel Žáček, Martin Klíma, Pavel Langer and others.

STRÁŽCE PAMĚTI JÁN LANGOŠ r. Břetislav Rychlík, Czech Republic, 2019, 52 min.
A portrait of one of the most outstanding personalities of our common history with the Slovaks. Dissident, Christian, big beat player, tireless fighter against evil and injustice Ján Langoš died in a car accident in 2006. He was 60 years old. Director Břetislav Rychlík captures the journey of Langoš's life partner through the crucial places connected with their life together. Ján Langoš became one of the most prominent leaders of the Public Against Violence movement during the 1989 revolution, which was founded alongside the Czech Civic Forum in Slovakia. Although he became a politician for a time after the November Revolution, he never wavered from his principles and never stopped striving to name and map the dark sides of our past.
