Plastic People of the Universe (2001)

Jana Chytilová's artistic documentary The Plastic People of the Universe captures the various stages that the legendary rock band went through during its more than thirty-year existence, which were also linked to the political development of our country. The film, conceived as a look back into the past, features unique archival footage, photographs, period press materials, etc., which are combined with testimonies from the musicians themselves and people from their circle (including Václav Havel and Lou Reed). Musical examples are also an essential part of the programme. The core of the feature-length documentary consists mainly of the period of the group's gradual maturation under the influence of Martin Jirous and Egon Bondy and the period of repression against the Czech underground. The film in no way glorifies the band or its individual members. In addition to the main storyline, it also captures the growth of personalities like Milan Hlavsa and places the work of The Plastic People of the Universe in a broader context.

Directed by Jana Chytilová, Czech Republic 2001, 74 min.
