Annotation of the publication

The main themes of this publication are Czechoslovak reflections on the work of British writer George Orwell, especially his famous novels 1984 and Animal Farm. Together with Yevgeny Zamyatin's We and Aldous Huxley's The End of Civilization , these are classic works of dystopian literature. The authors of this book examine not only the exile and samizdat editions of Orwell's aforementioned novels, their creation and dissemination in an unfree society, but also works of art influenced by Orwell's work. Attention is also paid to the forms of Orwell's 1984 in Czechoslovakia, including the repression of opponents of the communist regime and expressions of solidarity with political prisoners.

The publication gives account of Czechoslovakian reflections on the work of British writer George Orwell, especially his famous novels Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. Together with Yevgeny Zamyatin's novel We and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, these are classic works of dystopian literature. The authors of the present book examine not only the exile and samizdat editions of the aforementioned Orwell novels, their origins and dissemination in the society under a totalitarian rule, but also works of art inspired by Orwell's work. Attention is also paid to the forms of commemoration of 'Orwellian year' 1984 in Czechoslovakia, including the repression of opponents of the Communist régime and expressions of solidarity with political prisoners.

The catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition, which took place in Prague from 25 June to 25 September 2024.
