Looking back: the opening of the exhibition 1984: George Orwell and Czechoslovakia (18 September 2024)

On Wednesday 18 September 2024 we met for the last time over the exhibition 1984: George Orwell and Czechoslovakia.

The premiere began at 17.00 with a guided tour of the exhibition, during which visitors were guided by Petr Blažek, director of the Museum of Memory of the XXth Century. Afterwards, the programme continued in the attic space of the Werich Villa with a debate on samizdat literature. Miroslav Drozd, a translator who was dismissed from his job in the mid-1970s for his samizdat publishing, spoke about the translation of Orwell's works. Libri prohibiti director Jiří Gruntorád brought with him a number of samizdat and exile editions of Orwell's texts that circulated not only in Czechoslovakia but also in Poland, Hungary and the Soviet Union. The discussion was moderated by Petr Blažek. A comprehensive catalogue was published for the exhibition and is available in the Kosmas.cz bookshop distribution network.

You can watch a video of the debate on our YouTube channel.
