This year we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising, which, among other things, marked the culmination of resistance activities in Slovakia and Slovakia's signing up for the restoration of Czechoslovakia.
On Thursday, 5 September 2024, we held a debate on this topic at the Václav Havel Library and focused on the changes in the evaluation and meaning of the uprising and its actors over time. David Svoboda and his guests Vilém Prečan, Jan Rychlík and Michal Macháček gathered at the debate table. A recording of the debate is available below and under the link here.
If you are interested in the topic, we also recommend a recording of a discussion from the Dejiny.sk radio series, which was broadcast by RTVS with the subtitle Uprising as the rebirth of the nation. It focuses mainly on the identification of two basic tendencies: The first is the interpretation of the politician Gustáv Husák and the second is a critical polemic of historian Jozef Jablonický with Husák's book Svedectvo o SNP. The session was attended by my colleague Michal Macháček and the recording from 6 September 2024 is available here.
