On Thursday, 21 March 2024, a debate on Josef Čapek took place at the Václav Havel Library with the subtitle: "...nothing incomprehensible, nothing untrue."

The debate was organized by the Museum of the Memory of the 20th Century in cooperation with the Václav Havel Library, Prague City Tourism and the Brothers Čapek Society. Invited to the debate table were experts on the work of Josef Čapek, art historian and member of the SBČ, Pavla Pečinková, as well as Daniel Vojtěch, editor of Josef Čapek's works, and Jan Wiendl, literary historian and editor.

Our colleague from the Museum of the Memory of the 20th Century , Jan Samohýl, who moderated the debate, summed up the meeting by saying: "When I was preparing the debate on Josef Čapek, I was pleasantly surprised by the interest in this personality, which was confirmed by the full hall of the Václav Havel Library. What I admire most about Josef Čapek is how many genres and styles he was able to encompass, as well as his enormous commitment and diligence. I was very impressed that he turned to poetry during his imprisonment in concentration camps during the Second World War. He first translated poetry texts and later wrote his own poems. The depth of these texts is exceptional. All those who took part in the debate were able to see this during a reading from the works of Josef Čapek by Associate Professor Jan Wiendle."

The atmosphere during the debate was recorded by the photographer of the Museum of Memory of the 20th Century, Marta Myšková. Take a look at our photo gallery.

The next debate at the Václav Havel Library is scheduled for 20 May 2024 and will be entitled: Round Table as an Instrument of Change. Central Europe in 1989. The moderator of the event will be the Chair of the Board of Trustees and Senator JUDr. Hana Kordová Marvanová.
