František Emmert: The Czech Uprising in May 1945

The uprising of the Czech people against the Nazi occupation in May 1945 is not one of the greatest milestones in our modern history, during which the future fate of the nation and the country was decided. It broke out spontaneously only at the moment when the liberation from Nazism and the restoration of an independent state had already been decided. Yet it rightly occupies a very special place in our modern history. In several previous centuries, no comparable event had occurred in the Czech lands. At the very end of the war, tens of thousands of people joined the fight against the German occupiers with weapons in their hands and at the risk of their own lives, not only in Prague but throughout Bohemia and Moravia. They took part in the only nationwide armed uprising that had taken place in the Czech lands since the Thirty Years' War. Thousands of them died in the last days of the already decided conflict. The superbly crafted book you are holding in your hands is dedicated to all the victims, heroes, participants and memorials of the events of the last May of the war, which were indelibly etched in the memory of an entire generation of our ancestors.
