Debate State of Emergency in Poland 1981 (15 Dec 2021)

There was a joke in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s: what is the difference between Augusto Pinochet and General Jaruzelski? Answer: four dioptres. Forty years ago, the leader of the Polish United Workers' Party, as the Communist Party there was called, also sent tanks and soldiers against the workers and miners of his own country.
Together with the Polish Institute in Prague, we invite you to a debate at the Václav Havel Library on 15 December 2021 at 7 pm. The guests will be historians Kamil Dworaczek and Petr Blažek. Mirosław Jasiński, the main face of Polish-Czechoslovak solidarity in the 1980s, will give the opening speech. Excerpts from contemporary documents will be read by Veronika Bendová. Moderated by Maciej Ruczaj, Director of the Polish Institute in Prague.
