"...nothing unintelligible, nothing untrue."
The artist and writer Josef Čapek (1887-1945) is one of the most important personalities of Czech modern avant-garde art. His wide range of work ranged from fine art and literature to theatre and stage design. After Hitler came to power, Josef Čapek reacted to the new political situation. He published drawings from the series In the Shadow of Fascism and clearly opposed the Nazi regime. As early as 1 September 1939, he was arrested and then imprisoned in a number of concentration camps. By all accounts, he died shortly before the liberation of Bergen-Belsen. The date of his death is unknown; his symbolic grave is located at the Vyšehrad Nightingale in Prague.
We cordially invite you to a debate on this extraordinary personality on Thursday 21 March 2024 at 7 pm at the Václav Havel Library, Ostrovní 13, Prague 1.
